Snow in Texas!

Back in 2015, I moved to Virginia for a season to work at a KOA park. In March, we had quite a snowfall, which was beautiful. The freeze lasted about 5 days, during which I had no fresh water. Luckily, I had a fresh water tank and I also filled a big pan with water, so things weren’t too bad.

This year, Texas was overcome by a huge winter front from the Arctic, and even here in South Central Texas, we had a good-size snowstorm TWICE! I taught a stamp class in San Antonio on Saturday morning and the cold started on Sunday – freezing temperatures most of the time until the end of the week. Fortunately, I had water for most of the time because I dripped my faucets. Good thing, because my trailer doesn’t have a fresh water tank! There were a few periods of time where water in the park had to be turned off to make repairs, but for the most part, it was ok. Electricity, though, was a different situation. “Rolling brownouts” became “Power outages” lasting for hours, with power on for a shorter time. Again, I lucked out – I have an propane heater and a propane stove, so I was able to stay warm.

I spent most of the week on my futon, crocheting afghans. I completed one, made another, and started a third. If the power was on, I watched Netflix and if the power was off, I listened to audiobooks on my phone. And now, as I write this, the sun is shining, the forecast for today is a high of 80, and the snow just seems like a bad dream. Chances are, you were affected by the cold front, too. How did you get through it?

Garner State Park

One of our favorite activities is to hike. With this in mind, we want to start visiting a different local park each week or so. 2 weeks ago, we met some family at Guadalupe River State Park where we got a little ambitious following a path that paralleled the river. It was somewhat challenging with damp earth, leaves, and loose rocks. We made a decision then to only follow marked paths! I didn’t get any photos of Guadalupe River, so we will return another time.

Yesterday, we visited Garner State Park, less than one hour away. We stuck to marked paths, but still picked some trails marked “challenging” and “very steep”. Oh well, we’ll learn! We were at the park for several hours, hiking less than half of the red trails below. Lots more area to explore! We are actually planning to visit Garner soon for several days with the fifth wheel. A favorite moment was when we encountered a young woman that said the trails were hard for her, even though she was young, and that she thought that we were doing great, considering how old we were!

Thanks to my son, Brian, for the walking stick!

What’s New with Me

OK, after a couple of years of no posts, I am determined to start blogging again. To catch you up, I moved to a SKP Co-Op park in Hondo Texas in November 2019. I still had my fifth wheel and I became a co-op member on Lot #1. I filled the shed with all my crafts – and I mean FILLED. I don’t know how I was able to keep it all in the fifth wheel.

Then, one year later, I purchased a “destination trailer” from a member that was leaving and rather than move it to Lot #1, I moved to Lot #82, which also contains a nice shed that I am currently trying to squeeze all my crafts into (where does all this stuff come from????). I love the coziness of my trailer (it feels more like a house than an RV) and as a bonus, it has central heat and A/C.

At about the same time that I moved to Lot #82, my brother Bill showed up at the park with his wife (and my best friend), Susan, and their dog, Tito. They actually bought my fifth wheel (their motor home is up for sale) and joined the waiting list to buy a lot. In the meantime, they are renting a lot here. Like me, they love the area, which is quiet and peaceful. We have plans to travel during the summer, starting with a trip up the East Coast all the way to Maine this summer. For now, we are enjoying each other’s company and take turns cooking dinner each night. More on the family later!
