Snow in Texas!

By | February 23, 2021

Back in 2015, I moved to Virginia for a season to work at a KOA park. In March, we had quite a snowfall, which was beautiful. The freeze lasted about 5 days, during which I had no fresh water. Luckily, I had a fresh water tank and I also filled a big pan with water, so things weren’t too bad.

This year, Texas was overcome by a huge winter front from the Arctic, and even here in South Central Texas, we had a good-size snowstorm TWICE! I taught a stamp class in San Antonio on Saturday morning and the cold started on Sunday – freezing temperatures most of the time until the end of the week. Fortunately, I had water for most of the time because I dripped my faucets. Good thing, because my trailer doesn’t have a fresh water tank! There were a few periods of time where water in the park had to be turned off to make repairs, but for the most part, it was ok. Electricity, though, was a different situation. “Rolling brownouts” became “Power outages” lasting for hours, with power on for a shorter time. Again, I lucked out – I have an propane heater and a propane stove, so I was able to stay warm.

I spent most of the week on my futon, crocheting afghans. I completed one, made another, and started a third. If the power was on, I watched Netflix and if the power was off, I listened to audiobooks on my phone. And now, as I write this, the sun is shining, the forecast for today is a high of 80, and the snow just seems like a bad dream. Chances are, you were affected by the cold front, too. How did you get through it?
